WORKSHOP ON LINK BETWEEN ANIMAL ABUSE, CHILD ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

We are so pleased to forward to you the flier and registration form for the 3rd Annual Preventing Family Violence Workshop.  Please note that for a workshop packed full of information on the Link between animal abuse, child abuse and domestic violence and discussions about how we can work more collaboratively here in our area to reduce our rates of all three the registration fee up until Oct. 21 is only $20 -- that includes lunch, breakfast and 2 breaks!

The first 100 people to register will have their names entered into a drawing to win great gifts at the workshop, including:  a signed Eddie Mormon print, a gift from Joseph's lighting, a gift certificate to Black Tie cleaners and more!

Any organization that would like to have an information table at the workshop, please email me to let me know.  There will be no fee for your organization to be there to share what you do with the 200+ anticipated attendees.

I look forward to seeing y'all there, and making a difference to end violence in families -- against all members of the family.

On behalf of the Preventing Family Violence Workshop Planning Committee,
Take good care,
Beth Zilbert, Executive Director

Public Records Request regarding dog-deer hunting in Kisatchie

September 21, 2011

Mr. Bobby Jindal, Governor
Mr. Stephen Sagrera, Chairman
Mr. Robert Barham, Secretary

Dear Sirs:

Pursuant to the Public Records Act of Louisiana, R.S. 44.1 et seq., on behalf of myself and Louisiana’s humane society coalition, I request the public records described below to be copied and sent to me by electronic or US mail (see below).  We are willing to pay all reasonable copying costs, so kindly attach an invoice for the amount we should pay and the address to which our check(s) should be sent.   If the copying fee is expected to be more than $100, we request, in lieu of paying for your offices to make the requested copies, the opportunity to send a representative to the location of your choice and at a time of your choosing with a scanner to make our own copies.

We make this request based on Section 31 of Title 44 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes which provides that custodians of public records have the responsibility and duty to provide access to public records.

Description of information requested:  All  correspondence (including and not limited to drafts of documents, statistics, maps, letters, memos, budgets, taps, and electronic data, such as emails) between your administration and any and all other government and NGO (non-government organizations) and/or commissions , including the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, regarding any and all proposed changes to rules governing the use of dogs for hunting on Kisatchie National Forest  within the last nine months (January through September, 2011).

As the Louisiana Public Records Act specifies a response from the receiver of a request such as this within three working days, we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Latest Letter by our Communication Chair

Sir/Madam—

I would like to provide additional reasons for the ending of dog-deer hunting in Kisatchie.  In addition to the reasons we have already submitted, including

·         Lost dogs become “strays” and cause problems for Kisatchie neighbors

·         Lost dogs may starve or form hunting packs that interfere with wildlife & could pose a danger to other people in forest

·         It is less humane to hound deer before killing them

we would like to add

·         Killing of hunting dogs by automobiles when the dogs get on roads

I’m researching hunting with dogs. Last week we had a devestating experience. We are dog lovers. My husband accidently hit a hunting dog. We killed it. I cried and cried, actually still do. This poor dog had a number painted on her side and big box around her neck. The hunt club was given our numbers by someone that helped us. Later that day they came and got the dog, and their box.

·         Killing of hunting dogs by other hunters either accidentally or intentionally

·         Hunters may feel they have a right to kill hunting dogs interfering with their non-dog hunting based on laws of other states

o   http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2011/02/25/the-death-penalty-for-dogs-that-chase-deer/

·         A high rate of hunting accidents when dogs are used to assist hunters

o   http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ban_dog_deer_hunting/blog:

In 2010, twenty seven gun related hunting accidents were reported.  One was a fatality.  Where did these accidents occur?  All but 1 occurred where dog hunting for deer or bear were allowed.  The only accident to occur where dog hunting for deer or bear are not allowed occurred in Davie County.  As you can see, there are not 27 counties circled.  Several of the counties had 2, even 3 gun related accidents last year. Accident Reports do not include information about whether dog hunting was involved in the accident or not.  So any conclusions reached about where these accidents occur, is by definition circumstantial.  But should land owners be forced to face these odds?

o   http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ban_dog_deer_hunting/blog

Why Ban Dog Deer Hunting in Orange County? Aug 7. 2011     Safety – Deer Dog Hunting is not compatible with the growing population and land distribution of Orange County: o   Lot sizes are too small to assure that dogs and hunters will not interact in a dangerous way with residents; o   Population Density is too high to guarantee dog hunting, which occurs mainly on roads, won’t cause injury or death from illegal shots fired from the road, or dog/car deer/car accidents; o   There have been many dangerous confrontations between landowners and armed groups of dog hunters. 2.    Property Rights – Landowner rights must take precedence over hunting privileges; o   Dog hunters cannot guarantee that their dogs will not cross onto unauthorized private property, indeed dogs routinely chase deer over posted property into the road, where they are shot; o   Dogs and hunters do damage to the property and possessions of...

In addition to the websites shown above, there are many references on the world wide web justifying bans on dog-deer hunting throughout the United States.  Probably you are already familiar with these but if you need us to collect these websites for you we will do so.  Here is one that states more than 50 of the 100 North Carolina Counties have already banned dog-deer hunting:

We hope that  you will be persuaded to re-institute the (wisely implemented) ban on dog-deer hunting in Kisatchie as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
