HCR6-Exempts rules for possession of exotic cats
Committee on Natural Resources and Environment
Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Committee Room 4
9:30 am
HCR 6 BISHOP, STUART WILDLIFE & FISHERIES
Specifies accreditation requirements for exemption from Wildlife and Fisheries Commission rules governing possession of exotic cats

This concurrent resolution is going to be heard on Wednesday!  PLEASE email the Natural Resources Committee to report this resolution as unfavorable.  The Zoological Association of America (ZAA), which Rep. Bishop is trying to get authorized in the state, has much less stringent regulations (accredit mostly roadside zoos and breeding facilities) than the AZA and could potentially provide Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete with such an accreditation.  We cannot let this happen!  To our knowledge, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is against this resolution, as well the Humane Society of the United States.  Please follow instructions below to email Representative Bishop to ask for his withdrawal of same, and email all committee members requesting that they not pass this resolution favorably through the committee.  Big cats and other large carnivores DO NOT need less regulation...but rather more.

HB 231/BAN OF SALES OF DOGS AND CATS
HB 231 passed the House Criminal Justice Committee - 9 to 3, with 2 amendments.  More amendment(s) will have to be added once it gets to the house floor, but thought you all would want to know it passed one hurdle... many more to go.   Keep sending those emails!

Saturday, March 24, 2012

ON Wednesday, March 28th., 9:30 am

HB 231 will be heard before the House Criminal Justice Committee. Senator Walsworth has filed a similar bill SB 260 that provides that any parish may ban the sale of certain animals along roadsides, in parking lots and other outdoor areas.  SB 260 only gives the parish the authority to provide a ban....will not be mandatory; HB 231 WILL!   Let's be loud and proud and make this ban state-wide!  Use links below and contact them on or before the above date!

The Humane Society of the United States - Louisiana
The tragic events in Ohio last year demonstrate exactly why we don't need ZAA exemptions to our Louisiana law. Call Rep. Stewart Bishop (House Concurrent Resolution 6) and Sen. Cortez (Senate Concurrent Resolution 16) and politely ask them to withdraw these resolutions 225-342-2456.

COLAA Note:  These resolutions would basically remove what little protection the big cats and other large carnivores have in the State of Louisiana.   In researching the Zoological Association of America, it was discovered that they are a fairly new organization formed in 2005 and  list their accreditations to mostly roadside zoos and exhibitors; the Zoo of Acadiana is on that list.   These resolutions could potentially give Michael Sandlin, owner of Tony in Grosse Tete, the accreditation of the ZAA which, in itself,  is a call for alarm.   Please call or email.

PROHIBITION OF DOGS TO HUNT DEER IN KNF

SUCCEEDED!!!  We have just been notified!  A great big THANK YOU to all who emailed Wildlife and Fisheries supporting Alternative #2, prohibiting the use of dogs to hunt deer, on the ENTIRE Kisatchie National Forest.  For the full text of the decision, see http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5355461.pdf

1,300 emails were received with regard to this issue, and we'd like to think you all played a large part of this successful outcome.  Hopefully, the hunters will not request an appeal...but always a possibility.

Again, we can't thank you enough for your responses to our requests to get involved.  Just goes to show, networking works!

Please also send a Thank You to Regional Forester Liz Agpaoa at lagpaoa@fs.fed.us for her perserverance in gathering all the necessary information needed to prove how harmful this practice was to all involved; humans and animals alike.  Without her, the appeal to ban would not have even been considered.
