GOOD NEWS FOR KISATCHIE HORSES!

It came to our attention some time ago about the Kisatchie "wild" horses in the national forest causing a problem for the soldiers of Ft. Polk, and that a plan had been made to round up as many as possible to be sent to slaughter. There is some debate as to whether or not these horses are native to the area, but is believed that most are horses that have been released by their owners who no longer wanted to care for them and became wild for survival.

We are pleased to announce that due to the efforts of Julia Breaux Melancon and the Equine Department of HSUS, these horses will be saved. The Equine Dept. have met with Ft. Polk officials, as well as Kisatchie Wildlife Management, and have decided on a plan to round up the stallions to have them sterilized. They also have plans to discuss future sterilization with the use of ZonaSta-H, an infertility drug recently approved by the EPA. Now that's progress!

SPECIAL THANKS to Julia and the Humane Society of the United States,
Equine Department, for their involvement in reaching a humane conclusion.

And Thanks to Ariel DiGiulio with the Animal Law Section of the Louisiana State Bar Association for her initial involvement.
